Lithography

As I learnt the process as part of my printmaking module at Uni, I began with something I have enjoyed drawing: Snails. I loved playing with the perspective, and was told to draw something was interesting line work, so as to learn the quality of tone the grease pencils allow on the stone.
The Comfort Diner 2024
My main focus for this module, was depicting buildings I had photographed on my travels around Canada and New York. The Comfort Diner is located in New York city, and was one of my favourite diner’s of our trip. Not only did it’s food capture my heart, but the building caught my eye. It’s an old-school New York style – it looks rather like a tin can but is tucked in snug as it’s surrounded by far taller brick apartment blocks, and set against a backdrop of Manhattan skyscrapers.
My favourite prints of the set can be seen below.

For me, it was when the stone slipped in the roller and over inked the bottom section. After some incredibly dark prints and a lot re-etching with extra strong gum layers, the print begin to re-emerge. This unfortunately happened after I had attempted to erase a section and add in a figure, so it became rather messy!

Below are some of the sketches from the design process.
