Biography

I’ve been lucky enough to have grown up in beautiful Devon and Cornwall, and could be found on the beach painting and drawing even as a young child.

After a foundation year at Exeter College, I found myself studying Fine Art and Creative Writing at Aberyswtyth University, a place I was drawn to for its natural beauty. I spent much of time at Uni drawing, rowing, and drinking far too many iced coffee’s with my friends. As part of my course I was also lucky enough to study in Guelph, Canada for a semester. I spent lots of time travelling which greatly informed my work in the following semesters, especially as I explored Lithography and screen printing. Towards the end of my course I self-published a children’s picture book, which I authored and illustrated. I have loved learning the professional practise of this career, even if it is a challenge at times.

Post grad life is brutal at times… entry level jobs aren’t easy to come by these days! Especially in the arts. But I do love having more time to explore the possibilities of my art, and what a career in this could look like. Most of my experimentation has brought me back round to collage, and the amazing ‘Earth and Worth’ zine which I have co-created with my sister, Marilla.

Artist Statement

My artistic focus has increasingly shifted toward illustrating children’s picture books, most recently for my own stories. As a dual-honours Creative Writing and Fine Art student, I’m constantly brimming with ideas and am now at the exciting stage of bringing them to life.

I recently self-published a children’s book, Harry the Hermit Crab. This project allowed me to deeply explore character development through the anthropomorphised protagonist, Harry. What began as my final year project quickly evolved into a passion. Creating Harry the Hermit Crab also gave me the opportunity to further practice with gouache and watercolour, pushing my style in a bold and modern direction. Having grown up in Devon and Cornwall, I’ve always loved painting the seaside, and this book was a wonderful chance to integrate that passion into my work.

In addition to illustration, I’m also a keen scrapbooker. I particularly enjoyed incorporating my photographs and collected scraps from my travels around North America into my printmaking. Learning lithography was an absolute privilege, and I believe my series of prints, particularly those of the Comfort Diner, effectively convey the nostalgia and joy of my travels through this traditional and rare medium.

Recently I have been co-creating a zine ‘Earth and Worth’ with my sister Marilla. It’s about sustainable fashion and modern culture. I’ve had so much fun getting stuck into collage and publishing regularly. Whist being back in the South West I have been selling my work at craft fairs.
